Clarinetist JONATHAN SACDALAN’s passion for diverse musical styles inspires him to seek out new and exciting musical environments and performance opportunities in Los Angeles. Whether it is playing in symphony orchestras, premiering new chamber works, performing live with entertainment artists or recording for film and television, Mr. Sacdalan is eager to find new ways to broaden his musical horizons.
The highlights of his last several years as an orchestral musician include performing auxiliary chairs with the San Bernardino Symphony, the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, the Pasadena Symphony and the California Ballet Company. Currently, he serves as principal clarinetist in the Southeast Symphony.
As a chamber musician, he collaborated with clarinetist Ralph Williams in the premiere recording of David Lefkowitz’s Canonical Variations, released on the Albany Records label. The highlights of his work in chamber music include performances locally with Jacaranda, Pacific Serenades, Classical Revolution, the Beverly Hills International Chamber Music Festival, and the Helix Collective. He has premiered the concert works of notable Los Angeles composers including Bruce Broughton, David Lefkowitz, Paul Chihara, Mark Carlson, Roger Bourland, Haim Shtrum and George N. Gianopoulous.
In other musical fronts, Jonathan has recorded for Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, Jeff Russo, Jon Brion, Bear McCreary and others. His playing can be heard in the motion picture soundtracks of Disney’s Christopher Robin, Universal Picture’s Little and Welcome to Marwen. He recorded for Barbara Streisand’s 2018 album, Walls. Over the last several years, Mr. Sacdalan has recorded for television motion pictures and documentaries for Netflix, Amazon, and Hallmark Entertainment. He has performed live with notable artists in the film industry including Joe Hisaishi, Seth Macfarlane, John Debney, Alex Wurman, Didier Lean Rachou, Bruce Broughton, Sean Callery and more.
Jonathan holds a DMA and MM degree from the UCLA and a BM from the California State University, Fullerton. He is the recipient of several scholarships including the Léni Fé Bland Music Scholarship, the Kent Atwater Music Fellowship and the Ebell Music Scholarship. He has taught masterclasses at the Cerritos College and at the Superior School of Music of Lisbon, Portugal. In 2010 he published his doctoral dissertation titled The Secret (Musical) Lives of Hollywood Film Composers. Mr. Sacdalan studied with Gary Gray, William Wellwood and Håkan Rosengren. While not performing, Jonathan is a devoted clarinet instructor with the Harmony Project and LA Philharmonics’s Youth Orchestra LA Initiative, both organizations providing-no cost music education to low- income or disadvantaged urban youth in Los Angeles.
